Your donation at work in Italy

By Britt Lake | Senior Director of Programs

In the two months since a devastating 6.2-magnitude earthquake rocked central Italy, nearly 3,000 GlobalGivers like you have stepped forward to help. Thank you so much for your generous support of locally driven relief and recovery efforts.

The earthquake claimed 298 lives, injured more than 350 people, left 4,500 homeless and many more in need of food, water, and medical care. Our partners on the ground have been responding since the first days after the quake, and I’d like highlight three partners whose work you are funding:

  • Mission Bambini has been working to ensure 750 students at 15 schools damaged by the earthquake are able to continue their educations without interruption. They’re helping affected schools replace vital school supplies like computers, books, and scientific equipment.
  • Immediately after the earthquake struck, IsraAID dispatched their disaster response and relief team to affected areas across central Italy, focusing on the hard-hit towns of Amatrice, Pescara del Tronto, and Accumoli. They assisted search and rescue efforts, delivered emergency aid supplies, and provided psychosocial support to survivors.
  • The team at ActionAid focused their response on meeting the needs of people most often marginalized after a major disaster—women, children, and people with disabilities. They’ve coordinated with local women’s groups to help survivors dealing with trauma from the earthquake, begun mapping public spaces and buildings according to their safety post-quake, and have been monitoring the allocation of governmental relief funds to ensure they’re reaching affected communities.

All of this work on behalf of earthquake survivors is possible thanks to the support of generous donors like you. Thank you so much for standing with those in need, and look for future updates on the progress of long-term recovery efforts in Italy.

Warmly,
Britt Lake + the GlobalGiving Team

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
