Challenge

On August 24th at 3:36 AM local time, a strong 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck central Italy at a shallow depth of 10 km. So far, within the first few hours already 63 people have died, with the death toll expected to rise significantly. Authorities are struggling to reach the rural area, and there are no clear indications of the number of people still buried. After extensive damage and continued aftershocks, there are also fears of psychological impacts on children and communities at large.

Solution

Drawing on 15 years of humanitarian responses in 38 countries, IsraAID will immediately send a disaster response and relief team to the affected areas in Central Italy, focusing on the towns of Amatrice, Pescara del Tronto, and Accumoli. IsraAID's team will focus on the following three activities: 1. Search and Rescue 2. Emergency Aid 3. Psychosocial Support

Long-Term Impact

The first few days are critical, and IsraAID is appealing for funding to respond as soon as possible, and try to prevent any more damage. In these situations, early psycho-social support is critical to both recovery and trauma-prevention. IsraAID aims to share its globally acclaimed psycho-social programs with local authorities and NGO professionals so they can mitigate the impact of the disaster.
