Supporting Communities as Kumamoto Rebuilds

Almost four weeks have passed since the earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture, and while the affected areas still bear the scars of the disaster, recovery and reconstruction efforts are gaining momentum. Each families’ needs are unique, but Peace Winds is carrying out a variety of programs to meet them.

Our teams have been providing survivors with emergency supplies for the last four weeks, but they recently expanded this for people who are sheltering at home. Survivors may choose to do this for a number of reasons, including staying with their pets, feeling uneasy about living with others in a large evacuation center, or having disabilities or other circumstances that make evacuation centers difficult to access. However, because these individuals are not always registered with aid groups, they may be less likely to receive important information and essential supplies. By visiting people in their homes, Peace Winds teams deliver essential items and can monitor their needs.

In addition, the team has also begun helping residents navigate the administrative procedures required to access government assistance and take steps toward rebuilding their lives.

Meanwhile, Kumamoto has experienced record-breaking temperatures that are creating an even more challenging environment for evacuees. To help make life in evacuation shelters more comfortable, Peace Winds continues to run a bathing facility equipped with both showers and bathtubs. Private shower booths are also available for caregivers and family members with small children.

Many centers and other areas are still without running water, so the facility is proving crucial for helping evacuees maintain their health and hygiene. They can also be an important source of psychosocial support. Many evacuees are using the bathing facility as a place to reconnect with people they have not seen in a long time, bringing a brief sense of normalcy amid the difficult circumstances.

Emergency teams have also been dispatched to Kumamoto from Peace Winds’ dog and cat rescues. Many people are facing extra challenges as they live in their damaged homes with their pets or try to find alternative, pet-friendly housing. Some are unable to leave home to clean up earthquake damage, return to work, or otherwise resume their daily lives. So in addition to distributing supplies like pet carriers and food, Peace Winds recently opened a dog daycare. Families can leave their dogs in a safe and comfortable environment while they attend to essential tasks.

Step by step, survivors are moving forward while caring for the family members who matter most, including their beloved pets. Peace Winds will continue working on the ground to help communities move toward recovery and a return to everyday life. We are deeply grateful for your support.
