Challenge

Japan is one of the most disaster prone countries, so it needs responders with specialized knowledge. Adding to the challenge after the January 2024 earthquake, Oku-Noto is home to a small community that consists largely of an aging population. Evacuation life can cause feelings of isolation that negatively impact seniors' mental and physical health. Children here are also having a hard time after many of their friends moved away, and playgrounds and schools were converted to evacuation centers.

Solution

Peace Winds immediately dispatched its disaster response team to aid search-and-rescue efforts, emergency medical care, and distribution of food and supplies. Now, a team based in Suzu is leading long-term recovery as evacuees rebuild and adjust to life in short-term housing. This includes running an activity center for children, hosting community events and conducting wellness checks for seniors, and leading physical and mental wellness activities for residents of all ages.

Long-Term Impact

Natural disasters are only going to continue to strike Japan, and Peace Winds knows the importance of staying prepared. Peace Winds teams in Japan also run disaster preparedness programs, including drills and trainings, webinars and articles about how to best prepare, and community-centered activities where adults and children can come together to share their knowledge and experience in creative ways.
