A Midsummer Jazz Dream

The Stars
The Stars

Dear friends, supporters, and like-minded people,

This year's Jazz Under The Stars festival is over. The eight edition gave us a lot of energy and new fans of the villages in the Devetaki Plateau. It gave us a lot of joy and lovely emotions with our wonderful musicians and audience. However, it was not an easy task: the event offered a lot of challenges for us as well. For the first time this we decided to extend it in time and in scope, and we organized a three-day fest.

The first evening, Friday, 8th July, was addressed to the young generation: we invited tallented Bulgarian students from prominent mucis schools - Nedelcho Ninov - trombone, Ralitsa Toneva - saxophone, Vilizar Gichev - guitar, and Theodor Toshkov - drums, with the special guests Peter Terziev - vocal and Hristo Minchev - double bass. They offered some jazz-standards, selected hard-bop pieces and a pinch of bossa - nova.

The Saturday, the evening of the main concert was tremendous with the variety of musicians and jazz - formats ranging from classic dixieland through modern and ethno-jazz up to the modernized folclore repertoir of the local Cultural centre in Gorsko Slivovo Village. We had the pleasure to listen to the trumpets of Ventsi Blagoev and George Agatov, the clarinet of Nevilian Gemizhev, the guitar of Dimitar Blagoev and many, many more. One of the great stars was the exceptional piano-player Milen Kukosharov, a famous contemporary composer and author of beautiful music arrangements, together with the vocal Rosen Kukosharov. The ethno-spices were supplemented by Gergana Dimitrova and Kostadin Genchev, and the vocals Vesela Morova and Peter Terziev added some Brazilian "color" to the music picture. The almost neverending jam-session after the concert provided for even more unexpected fantastic formations and collaborations. The fest would not let us sleep almost until dawn.

The morning of the Sunday, July 10th, not that early due to some inteligible reasons, was fully devoted to the youngest. We hosted he exciting "Jazz For Kids" format of the Jazztet Foundation of Ventsi Blagoev for the second time in the village of Karpachevo. Over 50 families with their kids of 0 to 16 years of age were clapping hands, snapping fingers, singing, dancing and even playing under the professional guidance of the mucisians. There were girls who would not go down from the stage and stayed there during the whole performance. They felt they were a part of the making of this music, and even some of the jazz-sceptics were somewhat dissuaded and felt jazz was not to distant and complicated.

In 2022 Jazz Under The Stars Of The Devetaki Plateau edition we had over 25 Bulgarian jazz-musicians who touched the deep sences of the audience and helped us promote our wonderful Devetaki Plateau and its charming nine villages. We also had brilliant audience of different ages from all over Bulgaria who enjoyed the fest and were able to find their own piece of jazz within it. Finally, we had you, our supporters and donors, who hepled us again meet the challenges and once more say outloud: "Bulgarian villages are alive, come and spend some time here and you will know it!"
