This project will help provide stable access to a safe, quality education for girls from an impoverished area near Monrovia that recently lost its school. The Jennifer Albee Enrichment School, an all-girls school named after a champion of women leaders, was founded to provide academic excellence, career development, and life skills training to girls who otherwise couldn't afford it. Girls graduate fully prepared to take on viable professions and empowered to make positive life decisions.
Harsh economic conditions in Liberia dramatically reduce a girl's chance of completing a formal education. Public schools are sub-standard and the financial burden of paying for private school is too great for most families. The girls often must stay home to help with household chores and become susceptible to outside negative influences that jeopardize their chance of an education and a better future.
GEM-Liberia is addressing the problem through their local school committed to providing a safe, affordable, quality education tailored for girls and young women. The school goes beyond the core subjects to offer practical vocational and business skills, along with health and life skills, career advising and internships. Through programs that promote innovation and confidence, the girls will graduate with the essential technical and social skills to be successful in their chosen fields.
The project provides girls with the chance for a future without poverty. After opening its doors in September 2020 with just four girls enrolled, 120 girls are currently enrolled for the 2023-24 academic year. Within the next 10 years, 3000 girls will graduate from the school prepared for university or a high-demand vocation. These young women will have the skills and confidence needed to succeed in a competitive labor market, leading to a more secure future for themselves and their families.
