Summary

Poverty and lack of opportunity kill hope. Providing opportunities for people to earn an income opens all kinds of possibilities for these families: schooling, food, health care, investment, business re-investment, clothing... Kudvumisa Foundation looks for local resources (skills or natural) that can be developed for markets external to the local community. So far over 150 families have participated in programs to utilize sewing skills and local resources such as marula nuts and moringa.

Challenge

There are hundreds of families in this area that have the potential to participate in this project. This is an area of extreme poverty: there is little or no economy to participate in. Many families can not even participate in subsistence farming as there is no available land where they are. Further, they live in an area hundreds of kilometers away from markets. Transportation costs by themselves make access uneconomical. The business skills for marketing and managing a business are lacking.

Solution

We identify and develop local resources and skills which are marketable outside of the local community and develop the infrastructure to market and supply to these markets while providing business and skills training to participants for sustainability. Experience has shown that most families (women, children and men) are very excited at the opportunity to sell their local commodities, commodities they are very familiar with but have little or no value or market locally.

Long-Term Impact

Several hundred families that can earn money can take responsibility for their own health care, better quality food and nutrition, and schooling for children. Women tend to re-invest their earnings back into their family and household, raising the standard of living at each homestead. Participation results in greater expendable income for participants and the ability of choices in education, homestead investment (livestock, infrastructure), and health care.
