In 2004, Sarah Lance, founder of Sari Bari, met a girl name Pinki who was 16-year-old. She was standing in line in a red light area of Kolkata, India - selling her body. Pinki was trapped by her circumstances. Her mother had died. Her father was sick. She had two little brothers to support. Sarah asked her if she had anywhere she could go or if there was any other way. Pinki replied, "Where else can I go?"
From that meeting came an idea and the beginning of a community of women and men who seek freedom and restoration for the vulnerable in the forbidden areas. Sari Bari is an ethical fashion business that employs women who have been exploited in the sex trade or who are vulnerable to human trafficking. Women are trained as artisans to create handmade Kantha products from recycled saris. A donation supports programs the women of Sari Bari can participate in during her freedom journey.
Though the aftercare programs at Sari Bari, women are supported through training and beyond with mental health services, well-woman checkups, school support for their kids, home loan matching, and ongoing literacy classes. We believe in the transformation of red light communities through sustainable employment and a daily choice she makes for freedom!
