Summary

Hunger, poverty, and malnutrition remain a serious problem in South Africa. Many of the families in rural areas have no income, sanitation, and children walk about 10-30 km to school. Walk a Mile in my Shoes serves and feeds over 1,000 underprivileged children and youth daily in rural areas and informal settlements, through our youth Centres. We also provide school life skills and education support to all our beneficiaries, making sure they understand their school work.

Challenge

Over 2.5 million children in South Africa go to bed hungry every day. The number has drastically increased with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Hunger, poverty, malnutrition, and unemployment remain a serious problem in communities we serve, especially in rural areas. Our organization serves and feeds over 1,000 underprivileged children daily in poverty-stricken communities. Currently, we have 3 youth centres in operation in rural-areas and informal settlements.

Solution

Walk a Mile in My Shoes (WAMIMS) provides nutrition, education, sports, and arts to orphans, child-headed homes, HIV/AIDs infected and affected, and children from poverty-stricken homes. Our beneficiaries are trained in nutrition, food garden, agriculture, and entrepreneurship. We also empower and groom their talents, skills in sports, music, and arts. Most children and youth from rural areas are most neglected and they have great talents to share with the world.

Long-Term Impact

WAMIMS feeds over 500 beneficiaries per centre/village. And at least 250 beneficiaries attend our After-School Support programme, which assists beneficiaries with school work and life skills. We also empower and offer training on entrepreneurship and agri-business projects, teaching them to be self-reliance and financially independent to break free from poverty and hunger.
