This project will drill a borehole in Northern Malawi, providing free access to water for 182 children with hearing impairment at the school which is free but residential and has a budget of USD 6,112 per term but only receives about USD 2,852 which has to cover food, utility, and wages among other costs. A borehole and water storage facilities will ease the pressure on the budget thereby enabling the school meet quality food needs unlike depending on food handouts from well-wishers.
The funding can not meet all needs at the school which include food for the learners, learning and teaching materials, paying utility bills as well as paying wages for labour not met by government. Water bills usually accumulate to the extent of frequent water disconnections which leaves the school in serious water challenges and the learners have to cover more than a kilometre to find water. This creates a health risk as well as contributing to performance of learners.
This project will assist the school in having a steady and low cost water source which will require no exorbitant monthly bills. As the water will be low cost hygiene standards will also improve as the case now prohibits use of water in order to have low water bills. Bathing, washing, and cleaning of the hostels, classrooms and wash rooms will be done in a better manner. In this case the management will be able to save money for other purposes such as good and quality food.
In the long term the project expects to contribute to improved standards of education services in the residential facilities which should provide a good environment and the motivation of the learners to work hard in class. Provision of low cost water services will also help redirect resources to not only food but also learning and teaching materials which are difficult to buy with the current exorbitant water bills. In the long term we expect to see improved conditions for learners at school.
