Your coronavirus appeal update from Ashok in India

By Erika Narkiewicz | Digital Fundraiser

Across the world, communities are adjusting to lockdowns easing. In parts of India where the lockdown has been eased, people’s livelihoods aren’t recovering at the rate needed to feed families and meet daily necessities. Ashok shares his experience of lockdown and the necessary continuation of support at this precarious time:
“I’m 54 years old and live in Pune with my wife and two sons in this rented tin shack which costs 3,500 Rupees ($47) a month to keep. Before the coronavirus, both my sons were in school, my wife was a housemaid and I made pestle and mortars for grinding spices, which I sold on the roadside.
Due to the coronavirus, my wife lost her work so we immediately lost her income. I used to earn around 5,000 Rupees ($67) from making grinders but in the last 3 months, despite lockdown easing, I have sold none. During lockdown, we lived on one meal a day which we received rations for. I continued to make grinders, preparing for lockdown to end. But now, we are still waiting for trade to return. We are both looking for new work and in the meantime, I am so thankful that we continue to receive rations that help us while we try to recover our livelihoods.”
Your donations help thousands of families like Ashok’s and continue to do so as some places try to reach for a new normal. Thank you.
