Summary

All children should grow up in a safe, non-violent, and positive family environment, allowing them to fully enjoy their rights and grow to their full potential. To achieve this vision, the proposed project will provide locally coordinated training sessions to parents, giving them the confidence and Positive Parenting skills to be excellent role models for their children and their communities.

Challenge

One in two Cambodian children have experienced severe beating, and one in four have experienced emotional abuse. That violence against children is committed by their parents and caregivers. In 2017 there were more than 16,000 children living in residential care institutions (RCIs) in Cambodia. Approximately 80% of these children have one or both parents still living. Institutional care is widely associated with deeply negative consequences for a child's development and future prospects.

Solution

The project is required to provide Positive Parenting training at a community level for both vulnerable parents (those at risk of unnecessary placement of their children into residential care) and for parents and caregivers caring for (kinship care and foster care) children reintegrated from Residential care. The training will be split into 12 sessions over six modules: child protection, family communication, parental well-being, parenting style, positive discipline, roles & responsibilities.

Long-Term Impact

The parents will have learnt the key Positive Parenting messages. They will have gained the confidence and skills to raise their children in a way that protects the children from mental and physical abuse. They will utilize their new skills to establish safe, stable and nurturing relationships with their children and will understand how to use non-violent and non-harmful forms of child discipline. Those parents will inspire others in their communities, sharing the messages through peer education
