Challenge

Girls living in poverty are missing two to five days of school per month because they cannot afford menstrual products. The devastating effects of missing these days is the increased likelihood of dropping out of school, earlier marriage, pregnancy as well as limiting career options. Girls secondary education increases childhood immunization and nutrition, and lowers the rate of unwanted pregnancy and infant mortality. Educate a girl and educate a nation.

Solution

The Power Project will provide Luna Pads to 700 girls living in poverty on the North Coast of The Dominican Republic - allowing them to stay in school while menstruating. Luna Pads kits are reusable sanitary products that last for up to five years.

Long-Term Impact

Providing girls with disposable pads would create a waste problem in communities that have no landfill or incineration capacity. Luna pads are an eco-friendly, healthy solution that will provide 700 poor girls with up to 20% more education.
