“When the crisis started in 2016, I stopped school because our school was burned down," said Mabel a 19 years old internally displaced girl from Konye one of the most affected sub-divisions in the Meme division of the Southwest region. She is the second child in a family of 5 children. Due to so much insecurity, her family constantly seeks refuge in their farmhouse. "Being a Bamilileke family, we were frequently targeted by the NSAG. This forced us to abandon our properties and flee to Kumba in 2018”. Abandoned by a father who refused to move to Kumba with us saying he has where he wants to go, he never reunited with his family.

In Kumba, Mabel and her family rented a one-room plank house in Kossala. With no source of income and no access to farmland, she took it upon herself to assist her family and her sick mother whose health did not permit her to do anything. After so many job hunts, she found an ice cream sales girl job in Fiango. With a salary of $30 (15,000 FRS) monthly, she commenced work. “ I worked for 25 days and my employer told me she won't be steady and that she wants to hand over the business to her son". She was paid 5,000FRS for the number of days she worked. "With the 5,000Frs, I bought cassava for 2,000FRS, ripe banana for 1,500FRS and palm oil for 1,000FRS”. With this Mabel was able to start accra banana business.

In August 2021, Mabel was identified and incorporated into our Economic empowerment program in Meme. After building her capacity on Entrepreneurship, bookkeeping, saving and Sexual reproductive health right, she received her first level grant of $60 (30,000FRS).  The grant enabled her to go to a nearby bush market to buy raw plantains and brought to Kumba for sale. She also secured a place for 3,000 FRS monthly in the market. “There are days I go to bush market and there is no plantain, anything I set my eyes on so long as I know it will yield me profit I buy and bring to Kumba,"  said Mabel. She sells goods based on their seasons.

After 6 months of continuous monitoring, supportive supervision, and entrepreneurship coaching from Reach Out’s social worker in Kumba, Mabel was able to gain an average monthly capital of 48,000 Frs, and a monthly average profit of 22,600FRS. With proceeds from the business, Mabel‘s family food needs were sure to be met, “most importantly am happy I can now pay our house rents of 5,000Frs ahead of time. With my mother’s unstable health, I am happy I can afford basic medication".

In March 2022, pleased with her availability for supervision and coaching, resilience, savings habit, adherence to bookkeeping and desire to grow, Reach Out gave Mabel an expansion grant of $100 (50,000 FRS). With her capacity for expansion and guidance from an elderly woman in business, Mabel now buys and supplies plums in Littoral the economic city of Cameroon. With an increased capital of 150,000 FRS, she is capable of buying an average of 7 bags of plum weekly to supply in Douala. “On each bag, I send to Douala I am sure of making a profit of 3,500 FRS”.

Her astute cash management skills and knowledge has earned her some respect in her social group. “In our Meeting, I was given the position of treasurer because the people trusted me and believed am well to do. I can freely express myself in our social groups and I feel fulfilled because I can provide for my younger ones”. With the savings in the social groups, Mabel intends to send her three younger ones to school so they get the education she was not opportune to get.

Mabel is just 1 among the 30 vulnerable women and young girls who Reach Out Cameroon with support and donations from GlobalGiving is currently supporting economically through micro-businesses in the Meme Division of the South West region of Cameroon. Her success story speaks to the resilience and journey of a thousand young girls like her living in the conflict-affected North West and South West regions of Cameroon who despite the odds are determined to break out of poverty and make a living for themselves and family. And we are pleased to accompany her through our Poverty Graduation Scheme.
