Summary

School closure due to COVID presents an unprecedented risk to children's education, protection and well-being. ChezaCheza will give 200+ children in Kibera (Africa's largest urban slum) dance & life skills classes, a warm meal and food packages to feed their family. We are a non-profit that provides at-risk children with quality life skills education through dance in safe spaces through local mentors. Let's keep the families in our community safe, healthy and dancing during this crisis!

Challenge

The spread of the coronavirus in Kenya has led to the closure of schools and all sports activities, including dance. At-risk children in slums like Kibera do not have access to the internet or virtual classes. Their well-being and protection are at risk, with food insecurity and violence increasing. They are missing our dance classes, the personal interaction with their teachers and peers in a safe space, and the opportunity to express themselves, especially during these difficult times.

Solution

In our class, children experience the joy of dancing in a safe space while building essential social and emotional skills. ChezaCheza wants to safely reopen its dance and life skill classes to provide a safe space, guidance, nutrition and psychosocial support in these difficult times. The classes will be provided in small groups of 10 children to ensure social distancing and with necessary safety guidelines for children and teacher. A warm meal and food packages provide the necessary nutrition.

Long-Term Impact

The project will feed over 200 children and their families, ensuring their health and well-being during this crisis. It will also ensure that children have a safe space which can ensure their protection and allow our teachers to provide the necessary psychosocial support in these difficult times. Our classes keep children engaged in learning while building the essential skills that support children to navigate their challenging environment and realize their full potential!
