Millions of girls in Nigeria are missing out on education because of poverty, child marriage, period poverty, early pregnancy and other barriers. UNICEF estimates that 7.6 million Nigerian girls are out of school. Keep HER in School project will support out-of-school girls from low-income families with school fees, uniforms, books, menstrual pads and other school needs to help them stay in the classroom, complete their education and pursue the future they dream of.
Across Nigeria, millions of girls are missing school or at risk of dropping out because their families cannot afford school fees, books, uniforms and menstrual pads. UNICEF estimates that 7.6 million girls in Nigeria are out of school. Poverty, child marriage, early pregnancy and period poverty can further disrupt their education, leaving many girls without the opportunity to complete secondary school and build a better future.
Keep HER in School will help girls from low-income families stay in school by paying school fees and providing uniforms, books, school bags, learning materials and menstrual pads. We will work with schools and families to identify girls at risk of dropping out and provide support based on each girl's needs. The project will also support girls who have already left school to return to the classroom and continue their education.
Keeping girls in school gives them a better chance to complete their education, pursue higher education or vocational training and earn an income as adults. It can also reduce their risk of child marriage and early pregnancy. As more girls complete school, they gain the knowledge, confidence and opportunities to make informed choices about their lives, support their families and create better opportunities for the next generation.
