By Kate Lapides-Black | For the Good Communications Director
Last year, in December, 2020, you contributed to our GivingTuesday campaign through GlobalGiving, supporting the efforts of 90 young people who raised funds for For the Good in the hopes of creating positive change for girls in Kenya. The funds you gave to support their effort are critical, as they support our core programs throughout the year. Specifically, during the third quarter of 2021, impacts of these programs in the field include:
• The opening of three additional day high schools in the Loita Hills. We're thrilled to report that the third school, in the remote community of Mausa, just came on board in the past week. These schools will become just the 4th, 5th, and 6th day secondary schools in this remote 646-square-mile-region and create new opportunities for countless hopeful students like Najma, pictured above, to continue their educations past the 8th grade in the communities where they live.
• The hiring of a new Program Coordinator, Christine Mpoe, in Kenya. Christine will assist Team Angaza, our incredible team of young interns, in their work enrolling children from remote homesteads into school. Christine’s own remarkable life journey to attend university includes overcoming many of the intense challenges girls face in the region we work. These experiences make her a powerful and compassionate advocate on behalf of Maasai girls, and she brings a deep passion to be the change she hopes to see in her Maasai community. Christine holds a bachelors degree in Gender Studies and a minor in IT.
• Continued training of the pilot RACHEL (Remote Area Community Hotspot for Education and Learning) program at Olmesutie Primary School. RACHELS have incredibly high potential to improve the quality of education in places where there are few teachers and very limited resources, such as in the communities we serve. RACHELS are easy-to-use, portable, battery-powered devices that can be used anywhere in the world to wirelessly deliver free digital educational content to nearby tablets, laptops, or smartphones with no internet or data plans required.
Thank you, as always, from the bottom of our hearts, for supporting these efforts and being such powerful advocates for girls in Kenya!
