Shamas Rugby Foundation engages 568 young girls between the ages of 10 and 18 from 8 informal settlements in Nairobi and Kiambu County to learn and practice life skills through the sport of rugby. The aim of this project is to keep our girls in rugby by identifying what hinders them from being consistent in the game and providing these necessities to keep them engaged on the pitch.
The COVID_19 pandemic has made women and young girls even more vulnerable, especially those living in informal settlements. The young girls we work with face many issues (gender-based violence, teenage pregnancy, menstrual hygiene issues, among others), that put at risk their personal development and physical integrity.
Shamas Rugby Foundation wants to continue using rugby to engage young girls to overcome the challenges they face in their daily lives. We help them in this journey, by providing them with appropriate training and playing kits, sanitary towels, hot meals, medical care, and mentoring so that girls can feel safe, confident, and comfortable and attend the training sessions and play the sport they love.
By nurturing young girls' decision-making skills, confidence, and self-awareness skills we are creating better leaders in their communities, who will be able to make more informed decisions and take control of their lives for a better future. Moreover, by participating in a sport that is dominated by men, we promote gender equality and change the perception that rugby is a sport only meant for men.
