Keep Girls in Rugby

By Nicholas Aballa | Project Leader

Dear Donor's, Friends and Partners ,

We are incredibly grateful for your continued support of our project. Your generous contributions have been instrumental in empowering young girls to thrive in rugby and school. Your dedication to our cause inspires us every day, and we wanted to express our heartfelt thanks for being a vital part of this journey.

As we take a moment to reflect on our journey so far, we are excited to share the progress we have made and the positive impact we have witnessed in the lives of the girls involved. Here are some specific examples of the progress and achievements made in the project to keep girls in rugby:

Increased Participation:

In partnership with local schools, we organized our first "Girls Rugby Day" . This event included fun rugby drills, games, and interactions with female rugby role models in Mathare slums, that attracted over 250 enthusiastic young players categorised under the ages 13,15 and 17yrs.

Promoting Equal Opportunities:

Through workshops and training sessions, we educated coaches on gender sensitivity and the importance of providing equal opportunities for girls in terms of leadership roles within the teams. We carried out 4 workshops which was a only women coaches workshop with a total of 10 female coaches and staff in attendance

Building Self-Confidence:

We introduced a mentorship program where experienced female rugby players provide guidance and support to younger girls, helping them overcome challenges and develop their skills and self-confidence. One of the girls who initially joined the project in with low self-esteem and shyness now serves as the team captain. Her growth and confidence have been inspiring to witness.

Addressing Barriers and Challenges:

To challenge stereotypes, we organized a panel discussion with successful female rugby athletes who shared their stories of overcoming obstacles and proving that rugby is a sport for everyone. We conducted awareness campaigns in schools and communities to debunk myths about girls playing rugby, such as concerns about physicality and safety. We printed posters which were put on school notice boards in our 25 schools that we work with.

Celebrating Achievements:

Five of our talented girls was selected to represent Kenya in the Rugby Africa Womens cup tournament, highlighting their dedication and skill on a global stage. The local media featured success stories of girls excelling in rugby, leading to increased interest and support from the community. Nine of our under 15yrs old girls will be competing in france in septemeber in the rugby heritage cup.

Conclusion:

The stories of these young girls overcoming challenges and finding empowerment through rugby serve as a beacon of hope for continued growth and success in the future. We remain committed to nurturing and expanding this project to empower more girls through the sport of rugby.

Thank you for being an integral part of this transformative journey through your constant donations. Together, we are breaking barriers and creating opportunities for girls to excel in rugby.
