Successful Food drive

Does the world seem to be crazy?

At the moment many people feel they are living in a world of chaos and uncertainty, not knowing what the future holds. The normal response is fear, worry and stress takes hold.

However, many of us are in the position where we can STOP and FOCUS on:

Accepting that there are always going to be some factors outside of your control.

Focus on what you can control in your life.

Appreciate the good things that are in your life now and take time to think about everything that you are grateful for.

At New Hope Children’s Hostel, we are grateful for the wonderful support we have received from our friends and supporters in the first quarter of 2026.

Food Drive

This was a very successful local campaign which saw donations of dried food such as beans, posho, rice, eggs, sugar etc .This will keep our children and caregivers in staple food for 3 months.

We are also grateful for the cash donations totalling 5,350,000 UGX (US$ 1,442) with the major contributors; Simon and Rhona Rwashana, Jotham Kamanyire and Healing Water Ministries.

Thank you for your wonderful support particularly in times when everyone is having to manage their budget.

 New Home

The children have settled in well at the new New Hope Children’s hostel. There is a still works underway to enable us to pump clean underground water to the hostel and we are installing solar at the hostel to be self-sufficient. This will enable us to reduce our operational costs.

 Children in our Care

The first quarter of 2026 we have had 150 children with cancer and their caregivers stay at the hostel, where they were provided with accommodation, food, medicines and transport to the hospital for treatment.

A Place to Heal.

Peter, is 13-years old and was living a normal, active life like any other child until 2021. Peter developed a painless swelling above his right collarbone. For three years, it remained unchanged until June 2024, when a fall from a tree triggered rapid growth of the swelling.

Alarmed, his father sought help from multiple hospitals but found no answers until one hospital conducted a biopsy which confirmed Peter had osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer. He was referred to the Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) in Kampala for further treatment.

The diagnosis was devastating, but what weighed most heavily on Peter’s father was the uncertainty of where they would stay in Kampala, how they could afford food and accommodation and how to navigate treatment far from home. Despite these fears, he wanted to help his son and so made the journey to UCI.

At UCI, Peter’s diagnosis was confirmed, and their lives began to change for the better when they were referred to New Hope Children’s Hostel. Peter and his father were welcomed. Additional support they received was: Emotional support from other families; Counselling helped ease their anxiety; daily wound care for Peter’s painful lesion and his father was even taught how to manage basic wound dressing when nurses were unavailable.

Peter completed chemotherapy and underwent surgery. When the time came for radiotherapy, the family was overwhelmed by the 600,000 UGX cost (US$162). Fortunately, due to the continued support of our contributors, the hostel was able to cover the expense and ensuring Peter could proceed with treatment, which is scheduled for next week.

Though Peter has missed ten months of school, and his father who is the family’s breadwinner has been forced to leave his home and livelihood behind, the support provided by the hostel has been life-changing. Peter is responding well to treatment and can look to the future with hope.

Yes, we are very grateful as without your continued love and support this very important lifeline for the disadvantaged children with cancer could not go on.

Thank you and God Bless.
