Project Report | Dec 18, 2023
Greetings to our Friends

By Gerever Niwagaba | Acting Executive Director & Co Founder

There has been an incredible sense of loss with the passing of Dr. Samuel Guma,  Executive Director and Co-Founder of KHC, on Friday 8 December. He had been battling cancer for the past couple of years.

Dr. Sam was a visionary and his compassion was to help people who were disadvantaged and unable to access medical support. He was also an advocate for palliative care and saw an opportunity on how KHC could help children with cancer from poor rural communities, access treatment by providing families with accommodation, food and transport. The New Hope Children’s hostel and partnership with UCI, has been invaluable and Dr Sam was very proud of what they have been able to achieve for these families.

The Palliative Care Association of Uganda extolled him for playing such a remarkable role in improving the cancer survival rate amongst children with cancer.

Dr Sam was the type of person who quietly went about making a difference. He will be greatly missed but KHC will continue the good work he started.

RIP dear friend and colleague.

Christmas signifies a time of hope, peace and love.

As 2023 draws to a close it may feel overwhelming, with many families and nations, torn apart by war and unrest. People are longing for peace. Let us pray that the leaders listen to the people.

There are many people who could do with a helping hand this Christmas, they may be homeless, refugees, families struggling to put food on the table etc. It can be difficult to know how to help people who are in need but we can each do something to support these people by reaching out to your local charities and find out how you can make a difference to someone’s Christmas this year.

We also have seen an increase in the number of families who need our help. Normally the hostel accommodates 30 children and their caregivers and we are currently supporting 40 children and their caregivers.

We have been reaching out to our local communities, seeking help to have a food supply to see us through the festive season. Unfortunately, cancer does not take a holiday and many of our children will still be at the hostel during the Christmas season as they need to keep up their cancer treatment.  A Great Gift Idea!

While we enjoy giving gifts and receiving them, there is so much ‘stuff’ that we are given and we don’t use or use once and forget about it.  Give a gift that makes a difference, and that people will appreciate it as it will be a gift that keeps on giving.

You can purchase a Gift Card through GlobalGiving and the options are:

  • Make a donation in honour of someone special and send them a note and if you wish to support our children with cancer, the project name is“Helping poor children with cancer to access treatment.”
  • Or buy a Gift Card and the recipient can redeem it to a project that matters to them.

We would like to thank you for your continued love and support for the children at our hostel. With your help, since we opened our doors, we have been able to support over 850 children. You are making a difference to these families.

Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy 2024
