This project strengthens BRECON PESA SERVICES LTD, a trusted rural moneytransfer service in Kitui County, Kenya. Led by Jakob Omwaka, it bridges the banking gap by providing secure, affordable remittances, schoolfee and medicalbill payments. Through targeted business loans, entrylevel smartphones with data, and financial management training, we'll expand transaction capacity, reduce client fees, and build a selfsustaining local network.
In Kitui County, residents travel 20-50 km or pay up to KES 200 per trip to reach banks. High M-Pesa fees (KES 7 per KES 500 transfer), limited capital for local agents, spotty data connectivity, and an outstanding loan balance of KES 50 000 hamper affordable, reliable money transfers-forcing families to delay critical payments for school fees, healthcare, and daily needs.
We'll provide a KES 150 000 (US $1 200) business loan to boost daily float from KES 50 000 to KES 150 000, fund five entry-level smartphones (KES 13 000 each) with monthly Safaricom data bundles (KES 20 000), and underwrite a KES 25 000 workshop on digital payments, budgeting, and repayment planning. This capital and training will expand service reach, absorb transaction fees, and ensure sustainable operations.
With enhanced device coverage, data connectivity, and financial skills, BRECON PESA can scale from 30 to 100 daily transfers, serving 3 000+ families per month. Reliable, low-cost transfers enable timely school-fee and healthcare payments, build agent creditworthiness through timely loan repayment (KES 15 000/mo), create new agent roles, and foster inclusive economic growth-anchoring resilient, community-driven development across rural Kitui.
