At Imkaan, our commitment to creating safe, inclusive, and empowering spaces for children and youth in Machar Colony continues to bear fruit—particularly through our sports programs. As we step into the new academic year, the gymnastics and table tennis components have not only seen increased participation, but also a powerful shift in leadership and ownership by young community members who were once beneficiaries of the program themselves.
Gymnastics: Youth Coaches and National Dreams
The gymnastics program is undergoing a transformative phase. Several of our older students, having trained for years under Imkaan’s guidance, are now stepping into coaching roles. Javed and Feroze, both of whom began their journey with us as young boys eager to learn, are now leading the evening gymnastics sessions for boys. Their growth into disciplined, skilled, and responsible mentors is a testament to the long-term investment in community-led development.
On the girls’ side, the sessions continue under the leadership of Coach Furqan, supported now by two of our accomplished students, Kulsoom and Sonya. They are co-facilitating training for younger girls, offering not only technical skills but also encouragement and representation in a space where girls are often underrepresented.
One of our proudest moments this year is the success of Sonya, who has recently been selected to train with the Pakistan Army Gymnastics Team. She now trains daily as part of their official squad, preparing for the upcoming National Games. Sonya’s journey from a community-based program in Machar Colony to the national stage is not only a personal victory, but also a symbol of what’s possible when young girls are given consistent support, access, and belief.
Table Tennis: New Energy from Older Girls
An exciting development is unfolding in our Table Tennis program, especially among older girls in the community. For the first time, we’ve seen an enthusiastic response from girls aged 15 to 18, five of whom have recently joined the girls' table tennis team. This new interest stems from the presence of a female coach—an Imkaan alumna who herself was trained in table tennis through our earlier programs.
Her return as a coach has created a ripple effect, breaking cultural hesitation and offering the girls a relatable role model. These sessions now serve not only as training grounds but also as a space for confidence-building, peer support, and physical wellbeing.
Conclusion: A Cycle of Empowerment in Motion
The sports component in Machar Colony is becoming more than a program—it’s evolving into a community-led movement, with past participants returning as coaches, mentors, and changemakers. Whether it's through leading local classes or preparing for national competitions, these young individuals are breaking barriers and shaping a new narrative for what’s possible in underserved communities.
