Summary

The Knights in White Lycra (KIWL) is a cycling group of men and women dedicated to raising funds for various non-profit organizations throughout Japan. This year they have decided to help marginalized youth in Japan, through Mirai no Mori's Leader In Training (LIT) Program, which is designed to help marginalized youth learn leadership and practical skills to better prepare them for life after care. In June 2018, KIWL will cycle 500km in 4 days to raise funds to develop the LIT program.

Challenge

Children's homes house youth from 1 to 18 years old who cannot be supported by their parents. While these homes provide a safe place and the basics for living, most children still struggle with a host of unmet needs. Older youth often have little resources to help them transition to independence after leaving their institutional homes. It adds up to a terrible loss of human potential, and real social and economic costs for Japan.

Solution

The Knights in White Lycra will cycle in a 500 km ride from Nikko to Ichinoseki to raise funds for the Leader in Training program. The LIT program is specifically designed to provide high school-aged participants with opportunities to learn through an experience of being a leader and a role model to younger campers. This program is conducted in an outdoor environment with an English aspect to further develop their overall communication and organizational skills through monthly meetings.

Long-Term Impact

The LIT program will provide older youth with opportunities that enhance their future potential and better prepare them for post-care life. In addition to gaining new knowledge and skills, LITs will have internship opportunities with Mirai no Mori, which will aid them in gaining professional skills that will benefit them in finding work in the future. The LITs will always have a place with Mirai no Mori and are always welcome to return for future camps as staff members and volunteers.
