Summary

This project provides support to young adults who age out of South Korea's social welfare system who otherwise do not have access to financial resources to help with job search expenses, relocating out of the children's homes, and accessing post-high school educational opportunities through scholarships and one-time grants.

Challenge

Once Korean orphans graduate from high school or college (if they are one of the few to have the opportunity), they are left on their own financially and have to leave the orphanages in which they were raised, without much support from others. In order to get suitable jobs or continue post-high school studies, young adult Korean orphans need additional financial support for things like new clothes for interviews, start-up expenses for living on their own, and scholarships for continued study.

Solution

KKOOM provides supplemental funding to these post-high school young adult orphans on a case-by-case basis. The young adults must have a clear plan for using the funds and provide regular reports about their personal and professional progress. KKOOM volunteers stay in touch with these young adults as they venture out on their own, and the volunteers also provide important mentoring and emotional support.

Long-Term Impact

We will provide young adult Korean orphans with financial resources and necessary materials so that they can begin lives on their own outside of the orphanages in which they've grown up.
