We work with vulnerable girls from one of India's biggest source districts for sex trafficking. Our sweet girls have a life- perspective and understanding about the world that is tiny in comparison to highly educated Indian folk or Westerners.
We can say that we have not observed any of our girls entering sex work, and we have walked with them as they complete Year 10 at high school. However, saying all of this, we are disappointed to inform you that six of our girls decided to either elope or get married over the past few months. So, while it is probably true to say that they have avoided their most vulnerable years, they have nevertheless have not all progressed on into quality education as we had hoped. Are we disappointed by this? Yes, and we readily admit this.
Our house parents will continue to follow up on these six girls, or at the very least, the ones who desire and enjoy our folk following up on them. The girls will be informed that if their marriage fail, or if things do not work out like they had hoped, then they can always come back to us.
We too must look at strategies that can more clearly help girls to choose to stay with tertiary education rather than abandoning it and moving back to the village again. We have a number f other girls who still live at our safehouse.
Thanks for your patience in this regard.
