Change of project
By Catharina Van Den Bosch | Founder/Director
As we are trying to reduce the amount of projects we are running on GlobalGiving we have decided to discontinue the fundraiser for the Kunama people and continue to support them through as part of our community support project. If you have an automatic donation set up for the Kunama community, this is now automatically being changed to community support.
We are still fully committed to assist the Kunama community, nothing will change in our way of working and our commitment to see them improve as a community! And we thank you for your ongoing support to this needy community!

Back to school...

In the Kunama community going to school is not a priority. Many Kunama's have a low education level.
Meet our 4 little friends, who were enrolled in primary school this year. After a few weeks of attending, they lost motivation and started to miss classes on a regular basis. Their teacher tried to work with them but they acted disrespectful to him and had total disregard for their education. They were dismissed from the school.
Abraham's Oasis heard about this incident and decided to intervene. We worked with the parents and the students, gave counseling to the parents and the children, made them aware of the importance of having an education, helping the parents to be an encouragement to their children and teaching the children to be polite to their teachers. This resulted in the return of the children to school and they now come home to much more suportive parents. The community around them has followed what has been done for these students and their family and they in turn start to encourage their children to go to school and stay in school..
Thank you for playing a big role in our assistance to this needy community. Slowly we manage to bring change through investing time, showing we care for them and setting examples.

Kunama update

We enjoy working with the Kunama community. To help them to bring about change in their community has been very encouraging.
The result of our awareness raising activites has been that female genital mutilation practices has been greatly reduced. Especially one influential traditional birth attendant has now become a strong advocate against this practice and educates women who come to her and she is also checking on her colleagues to make sure that no-one is backsliding into this practise.
35 women have been assisted to start business. We trained them and we are following them intensively. We had expected difficulties but the women have become shining examples. They are happily doing their business and are keen to expand it.The businesses vary from poultry, goat farming, grain trading to small retail shops.
We thank you for your faithful support to this project. It brings a positive change in the Kunama community.
