Hurricane Mathews has placed the people of Haiti in a deficient position as we regressed in the environment due to the added ecological destruction it brought with burning winds and increased innondation, the harvest for a second planting season is threatened. In an area already threatened with erosion and prone to natural disasers yearly.
Long term rebuilding brought to bear important reflection in the criteria considered for rebuilding. The coastal area of the South is damaged beyond recogntion in some parts, we begin to ask the questions:
Can all the mills and gardens be restored?
What are the risks of surviving another storm? leading to the questions on standardization to resist weather of this magnitude force?
We have restarted three nurseries that lost all their plant productions (180,000 trees) but there is greater work to be done on collaboration with other organization to reforest and recover from the lost of so many trees. The lost of so many trees resulted in increasing the vulnerability of the population to natural elements
The challenge is to redefine some of the criteria for project approval looking at options that will primarily increase resilience not only for the organization/applicant but for its community at large. Can we create a geographic demarkation for coastal organizations in coastal cities that are more vulnerable and thus are a "risky investments". As we are moving towards the rehabilitation of 21 organizational projects, it becomes essential that we reconvene with our leaders and partners to reconisder the criteria and decide on issues of priority for rebuilding and making organization that are supported more resilient facing climate change. We will also consider models for improved stored of grains and food in times of natural dissters.
We have supported over 2605 farmers to get back to their planting and some have harvested their first food since the Hurricane in October. Thank you for making it possible. As we move forward, we continue to need your help.
