Centro Las Claras: New Opportunity for Teen Moms

First of all, THANK YOU for your donations and on-going support for The Las Claras Program. Your actions have been key to continue with our program and together changing the life of many teen mothers.

It´s already been 6 years since we started the program! Las Claras started with the belief in the power of education and the effect that it would have on empowering teen moms. And with that in December `22 we graduated our ninth group of teen mothers. We are incredibly proud of everything our teen mothers have accomplished in all these years, 145 teen mother have graduated from our program, 30% of them working above minimum wage, 20% of them are currently in a university and we are sure that starting this 2023 we will bring change too many other lives as well.

All groups of Las Claras have also continued to receive a variety of workshops and classes, on top of the fixed syllabus that allows them to receive their high school diploma at the end of the year. One of their biggest personal improvements, is that they now feel empowered enough to talk publicly in defense of human rights issues. As you can see, we´ve come a long way during these past years. The teen mothers at the Las Claras Program have received care, education, and continuous support which allows them to find empowerment previously unknown to them. Still, the reality in our country is one that requires further action: only during 2021, there were 11,185 registered cases of teen and child pregnancy. And this number keeps on increasing, as every teen mom will most likely have a second child during the next 24 months. Worst of all, 75% of these girls will abandon schools. They will lack a plan for the future, self-esteem and confidence to pursue their dreams, a job to support themselves and their babies, and will add numbers to the cycle of poverty that pervades their environment.

 Since our last report we have had great advances in our expansion project and we have continue to help many teenage mothers.

On August 2022, Group 3 of Santa Ana started their last and most important part of the program, the internship, where they are able to go an experienced real jobs and so they can explore the working life and hopefully stay in the companies where they are doing their internships in. 

On September 2022, we have returned to our house, we are very excited to be back, since the construccion of the first floor was finished giving us the opportunity to start with a new group of teename mother as well, Group 10 of Felipillo started on September 10, 16 new teenage mother and their children are giving the opportunity of changing their life completely. 

The second floor of the expansion is still under construction but we are very pleased to announce that it will soon be over and we will be able to help many other girl, boys and teenage mother of the community.
