Summary

The mission of W/NP is simple and effective. We help people in Nicaragua improve their quality of life in practical sustainable ways. By working with local community leaders at their request, W/NP has established over 50 learning centers throughout Nicaragua. The Learning Centers offer classes which lead to personal and professional growth and development, this opens doors that help provide meaningful income while allowing them to still remain in their communities to care for their families.

Challenge

Limited educational and employment opportunities make it difficult to obtain technical skills that lead to improved quality of life. Being able to provide and care for a family is a fundamental desire, and not having ways to do this is frustrating. The experience of Partners in it's 56 year existence is that Nicaraguans are hard working and will benefit from training and skill development.

Solution

What was initially called Sewing Centers has transitioned into the Learning Center program as now more classes are provided in areas other than sewing; cosmetology, baking, gardening, bicycle repair, business management, music, youth programs, sports, sewing machine repair and much more! Nicaraguans are able to acquire skills at the Learning Centers, giving them a sense of dignity, independence and purpose. 1000's have gained skills & been mentored through the Learning Center program of W/NP.

Long-Term Impact

Supporting these women today encourages a dignified lifestyle, out of the sweatshops, and being able to remain in their communities. It keeps their children in a safe environment, and allows sharing talents gained among their own families and friends. Local indigenous women coordinate classes at the self-governed Learning Center's which are in homes, schools, churches or perhaps a community building, this enables them to offer and tailor training classes in respect to their community's needs.
