1st Cooking Lesson for the Sherin Bowen Library

Part of the W/NP Learning Center Program includes a Lending Library Project. Learning Centers are known as places to acquire knowledge, so it only makes sense to include a resource section, otherwise known as a library. Libraries are much more than checking out books, they are also a place to gather with friends, to study, to learn new things, make craft activities and so much more!

Thanks to a dedicated, volunteer Learning Center teacher, a small cooking group has formed from the children who attend the Sherin Bowen Lending Library. This Global Giving update is about their first baking experience, “How to make Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies” offered by Karla, Learning Center teacher.

This was the first of several baking classes to be offered for lending library members as a complement of activities to go with literature. A collaboration of sponsors and volunteers came together to make a fun event happen. Special thanks to Petronila and Blanca who helped sew the hats and aprons from donated material for the kids, Jael and Leonor for helping with logistics and of course to Karla for volunteering to teach the class and share her knowledge, making a very memorable experience for the kids who very much enjoyed the class and would like to have other activities.  The total budget was US$23 - thank you to the donors of this project.   Here are some comments from the kids:
o I am member #48 of the SB library, I am 15 years old and I’d like teacher Karla to continue teaching us baking and thank you to the people that donated the money to make the cookies, they were delicious.

o I think the baking class was very good, I liked it very much and could learned how to make cookies. I’d like the baking classes to continue with Karla as a teacher. I am member #20. Thank you to the people that donated the fund to make this possible for us.

o I am member #8 of the SB library, I liked the class as much as teacher Karla. The cookies were so so delicious . Thank you for providing the class and hope we have another class like that. I would like the group to have a name and I suggest it be “Karla y sus Niños” or Karla and her children.
