Lifesong Kenya plans to provide alternative conflict resolution to 100 at-risk male teens who are in conflict with the law in Kenya. The project aims to use skills training (computer and bike repair), character development, financial literacy, healing and reconciliation with family, the police and the people the boys have wronged and hurt through crime. By doing so, we hope to prevent stigma, rejection and reduce likelihood of re-offending and recidivism among at-risk male teens exiting prison.
According to the Welfare Officer at Kamiti Youth Corrective Training Centre, an estimated 1,000 at-risk male teens exit the facility every year. Although the Kenya Prisons Service is providing rehabilitation programs, these at-risk male teens face the risk of growing bitterness, getting recruited into gangs, facing stigma and becoming hardened criminals. This project will impact the lives of more than 100 male teens exiting the facility.
Lifesong Kenya provides skills training, character formation, financial literacy and alternative conflict resolution services to at-risk male teens, their families and the people they have wronged and hurt. The male teens undergo training at the facility and gain skills, integrity and resilience they can use to get employment or start their own businesses. We also involve the parents, the police and the people the boys have wronged for purposes of healing and reconciliation.
The project will empower 100 male teens enabling them to get out of the re-offending cycle, make communities safer for women, children and the elderly who often suffer the most from crime and offense. This will also improve chances of the boys getting accepted back into the community, thereby reducing crime, re-offending and recidivism. Ultimately, families, business and institutions will be safer and have high chances of thriving. The boys will also be our change agents in their communities.
