Start of Year Update

By Olivia Alvano | Communications and Fundraising Manager

Our work in the first months of 2026 has continued to highlight both the importance of free, independent legal assistance and the persistent barriers to accessing it across Europe.

From January to March, ELIL supported more than 1,300 people in Greece and over 950 people in Poland. Over one quarter of those assisted were children, including unaccompanied and separated minors. Behind each figure is a person navigating an asylum system that remains complex, inconsistent and difficult to access.

In Greece, arrivals reached 5,755 by the end of March. Our teams in Athens, Thessaloniki, Samos and Lesvos continued to work in a system marked by delays, frequent rescheduling of interviews and ongoing barriers to accessing the asylum procedure, including the continued dysfunction of online registration platforms. Our lawyers supported applicants to register their claims, communicated with asylum authorities on their behalf and assisted them in navigating administrative processes. We continued to support families in accessing accommodation, identify and refer victims of trafficking for specialised support, and assist young people through age assessment procedures, especially children at risk of being treated as adults. Across all locations, we remained present in community centres and camps, including the legal container on Lesvos, responding to a wide range of day to day legal needs. At the same time, we observed increasing requests for family reunification and continued to support highly vulnerable applicants, such as those in detention.

In Poland, restrictions on access to asylum at the Belarus border remain in place. ELIL continues to be the only organisation with lawyers permanently present at the border, supporting people who are unable to register asylum claims and who face detention or removal. In the first quarter of the year, our work focused on advancing existing cases, challenging unlawful practices and pursuing strategic litigation, including a case before the European Court of Human Rights following a deportation to Ethiopia carried out without informing legal representatives. Cooperation with border authorities remains difficult, creating ongoing obstacles to effective legal assistance.

We also continued to assist refugees from Ukraine in Warsaw. While the number of Ukrainians in Poland remains high, the legal and policy framework is becoming more uncertain, with changes to temporary protection and increasing numbers of negative asylum decisions. At the same time, demand for legal assistance remains significant, and our team continues to support refugees navigating these changes alongside an increasingly diverse group of applicants.

Across both countries, the situation remains characterised by restricted access to asylum, procedural barriers and growing pressure on existing systems.

Yet the impact of legal assistance remains clear. Applicants are able to access procedures, families are reunited and vulnerable individuals receive the support they need to navigate complex systems. Each case demonstrates the continued importance of independent, free legal aid.

With your support, we will continue to defend the right to asylum in camps, courts and border areas.
