Challenge

Americans abused abroad are faced with difficult legal issues, including protracted international custody cases, restraining orders, and may be served a Hague petition for international child abduction. If a survivor is served with a Hague petition, she is not eligible to receive foreign and/or US government provided legal assistance although the abuser is. Without adequate legal assistance, the survivor and/or her children risk being forced to return to the foreign country with the abuser.

Solution

AODVC assists survivors in locating experienced international family law attorneys and provides survivors with up to $1,000 in financial assistance.

Long-Term Impact

A survivor will have proper legal representation to help prevent the survivor and the children from being returned, either together or alone, to an abusive situation.
