This is a project with 50 families who conserving Kodigahakanda sanctuary and their livelihoods developing sustainability. 5 hectares of new forests will be built through the transformation of the Agro - Forestry (Forest Garden/ Analog Forest) concept into a reality. The plants selected here are perennial plants that act as carbon reserves and earn them income throughout the year.
The Forest ecosystem is being preserved by the people who live around the Kodigahakanda sanctuary. But But the vast majority of them suffer from poverty. Most of the land is steep. These lands belong to the wet zone of Sri Lanka. Land productivity is low due to frequent soil erosion caused by heavy rains for about six months of the year.
The project aims to improve the productivity of the land and make the land a source of income for the people throughout the year.Steps will be taken to prevent soil degradation. An economically viable perennial crop will be cultivated on a land plan. This concept has been known in the past in the name of Kandyan Forest Garden. These lands have a diverse plant community. When one plant does not yield, another plant produces yield. This project will enable the family to continue providing income.
After several years, a small forest of about 5 hectares is being built. It will accumulate atmospheric carbon. It will help mitigate climate change. Also, these lands are planted with plants that are resistant to climate change. So this project is helping people to some degree adapt to climate change. The springs will be activated while maintaining groundwater levels in the area. Properly increasing soil quality will increase the productivity of the land. The growth of environmental services.
