Mental & physical wellbeing for seniors

By Zsofia Racz | Director of Corporate and International Relations

Supporting the Mental and Physical Wellbeing of Elderly People

At Önkéntes Központ Alapítvány we are constantly working to support the mental and physcial wellbeing of the senior members of our society. Our team is dedicated to find various opportunities to build community, keep company and organise programs for our beneficiaries.

In June, we participated in the Senior Festival, where we created an engaging program for both our supported seniors and festival visitors. At our stand, seniors could enjoy yoga, gymnastics, and even cheerleading, activities designed to promote physical health and joy. Our senior volunteers were warmly welcomed, and it was especially meaningful to see some of our most isolated beneficiaries join the activities, accompanied by their dedicated volunteers. For many, it was a rare and valuable opportunity to leave their homes, socialize, and experience a sense of belonging in a lively community setting.

In August, we joined a local market with a program that brought together culinary traditions and community spirit. Our senior volunteers prepared homemade cookies and warm lunches for visitors, enjoying both the teamwork and the appreciation they received. Thanks to the support of GlobalGiving donors, we also published a special Hungarian recipe book, featuring beloved dishes contributed by our senior volunteers and elderly beneficiaries. This initiative not only celebrated their culinary heritage but also created a lasting product that we hope to expand with future editions.

Looking ahead, we are preparing special programs for the International Day of Older Persons (October 1st) and for the Christmas season. At the heart of all our activities remains the same mission: supporting elderly people through meaningful engagement, community connection, and the power of volunteering.
