School Meals Program Improves Learning

Today, the cost of a meal has doubled significantly due to the high inflation worldwide. This has resulted in many families missing some meals, leading to malnutrition and most kids do not attend school because they have to look for food first to enable them to learn well. This situation is greatly affecting education.

In our small way to mitigate this situation so that the girls can stay in school is through our school meal program that has really gained the backing of our community garden and rice farming. Through these projects that American Foundation for Children with AIDS supports, we are able to keep the girls in school. It is ensuring that the children get the nourishment they need to learn and grow as children.

There is a sense in which the girl child and beneficiary families has benefitted with our school meal program such as

1. Providing nutrition to kids.

2. Boost the income of poor and vulnerable households knowing that a meal is taken care of at the school.

3. Improving the learning outcome of the child.

4. Promotes gender equality by keeping girls in school longer, thus delaying pregnancy and early marriages.

5. Promoted the dignity of the girl child.

We've realized that providing school feeding programs is an effective way to work towards sustainable social change and significantly increases the enrollment of girls. We could not have done this without the support of generous donors of AFCAID and I am pleased to report that your investment is really giving hope and significant change to many here in Miwani. Thank you for being part of this project.

Eggs and Beans Keep Kids on Track

Our love and greetings from Kenya. Lots of flooding now, but we are managing the situation. The climate has really changed here as it didn't rain heavily during this period before.

I have another update that I would love to share with you all. It's impact is tremendous in the lives and children in our program. As you all know, we are working with children and families affected/infected with HIV/AIDs and they need a lot of protein and nutritious food for their body to respond well with medicine. Earlier this year, we started a chicken project with laying chicks, aiming at producing protein for our kids both at the orphanage and school. The project has been a success with great impact noticeable in the health of our kids, which brings joy and sense of keeping working on this project. With the words from the teacher, "Before introducing eggs to the meals timetable for the kids, they could not participate well in class, some were weak and some were collapsing at the class, not knowing what was wrong. The general performance was not good for some kids because they were hungry. Now there is a complete difference. I am amazed for what eggs and beans have done to the general health of the kids as we no longer have cases of collapsing. The kids can now concentrate in class and their performance has risen significantly." According to our tracking records, it shows that their body weight to height is healthy and there are little cases of absenteeism recorded related to health issues. Their faces are bright as you can see in the photos and we are super excited about this project.

Adding to the organic food we produce at our garden project, we are proud that we are the only garden producing the organic food in our sub-county and we've seen great returns and great impact. Thank you so much for standing and walking this journey with us from the beginning, we have a reason to smile and to rejoice in our work, as we head towards making these projects sustainable, we want to let you know we could not have been where we are without your support. Tools for Women's Empowerment

Today I want to share with you about our effort of keeping girls in school within our community and this is happening through our tailoring project.

We recognise the fact that education is one of the most powerful tools for women's empowerment and we want to do all that it takes to keep the girl child in school throughout her learning period. According to our assessment and findings we found out that high percentage of girls in our community are missing the school because of

1. menstruation

2. Stereotypes

3. poverty

Each of these issues will negatively influence the life of a girl child and either ends of in early pregnancy, getting HIV/AIDs, early marriage e.t.c leading to poverty at the long run.

We choose to focus on menstruation with a common goal that we don't want menstruation to stop education of a girl and we are responding to this through our re-usable sanitary pads. We have distributed about 3,000 sanitary pads to different school in our community and the results of this is amazing. Now girls are able to concentrate in class during their monthly flows, the performance of the girls have seen risen to better grades, Cases of absenteeism for girls of declined significantly, Early pregnancy and early marriage amongst girls have seen declining significantly and we believe that slowly by slowly these girls will be able to transform the entire community to graduate from poverty.

Thank you for walking with us through this journey, though there are challenges we still face currently but the success stories we've witnessed and continue witnessing keeps us moving and giving up will never be an option for us.
