We have developed an educational App pre-loaded in a solar-powered tablet which operates without internet or electricity. This innovative app is a vital learning tool for children in 'off the grid' locations. It will provide a rich supply of books in both the local and English language to more than 200 students and provide teaching resources for teachers.
Even though children in Uganda go to school, there are not enough educational resources for children to significantly improve their literacy skills. Many children and teachers do not have access to internet, electricity, books and materials. These children are at high risk of dropping out of school, meaning they have much less opportunity to succeed. This project will benefit more than 200 students who live in Uganda.
Sun books will provide a literacy program to this community by encouraging teachers and students to read and write through the use of technology. Teachers are trained to develop locally relevant content related to their communities. They help to translate the local language and receive an income for their work. The teachers are also taught literacy activities and strategies that they can then share with other teachers and families.
Sustainable reading and writing: Technology, such as cellphones and computers, are being introduced to Uganda and are growing at a fast rate. To ensure rural communities are not left behind, we want to engage both teachers and students in the development of their own learning and teaching materials through the use of technology. In the long-term, we expect this will generate an income for the teachers, while increasing literacy rates in the wider community.
