The second quarter of 2024 was the time for ComingOut to publish our annual research on the LGBTQ+ Community in Russia. When we say research, it means work that took months, shed light on every Russian region, and considered the experiences of 4701 respondents. This is the data UN and the US Department of United States use further in their work, as much as many other international institutions that trust our years of experience in such research.
Our conclusions, putting them shortly, say that members of the community experience more hostility and feel less safe in the country. However, we do believe that the worsening we witness isn’t as drastic thanks to the outstanding work of LGBTQ+ organizations in the country.
Speaking of the support Russian queer people can still rely on, since the beginning of May we have conducted 615 psychological consultations, 167 legal consultations, and 56 career consultations. Receiving such help free of cost, community members find much-needed predictability and get a chance to plan other aspects of their lives.
Following up on our previous report, July 2024 marks a year since the gender transition ban legislation. As you can imagine, this law drastically changed the lives of thousands of transgender people in Russia and the demand for our support changed too. For instance, the amount of requests for legal support has doubled – on average we provide ~40 consultations for transgender people every month. When it comes to psychological support, we have provided ~42 psychological consultations to the trans community since last July. And that is, again, demand growth of more than 50%.
And that is why the support of our donors is as meaningful as ever. Thanks to the generous support of our private donors, we are now managing to cover the growing demand for our legal support.
Finally, here at ComingOut we believe in and see the impact our work creates for the LGBTQ+ community in Russia. To be a part of this ride of support, please do follow us on the English Instagram page to stay in touch with the Russian queer community,
Thank you for your support!
