Life-Saving Insulin for 1,000 Diabetic Patients

by Equitable Medicaid and Clinical Research Ltd/Gte
Life-Saving Insulin for 1,000 Diabetic Patients

Summary

Diabetes affects over 4 million Nigerians, yet insulin remains out of reach for many due to cost and poor supply in rural areas. Without insulin, patients risk blindness, kidney failure, amputations, and early death. Many families cannot afford regular doses, forcing patients to ration or skip treatment. This project will provide free insulin and syringes for 1,000 diabetic patients in need, helping them manage their condition and live longer, healthier lives.

Challenge

Insulin is a life-saving drug, yet it remains unaffordable for many Nigerians living with diabetes. Each vial costs more than the daily income of most low-income households, making consistent use impossible. Patients are forced to ration doses or stop treatment, leading to complications such as kidney failure, nerve damage, stroke, or death. Limited availability in rural areas worsens the situation, leaving thousands untreated and at high risk.

Solution

The project will purchase and distribute insulin and syringes to 1,000 patients who cannot afford treatment. Health workers will provide safe injection training and basic monitoring support. By covering the cost of regular insulin use, the project will prevent dangerous interruptions in treatment. Patients will be able to manage their condition, reducing hospital admissions and complications while improving quality of life.

Long-Term Impact

Free access to insulin will reduce preventable deaths among patients with diabetes. Consistent treatment will help people avoid blindness, kidney failure, and amputations, allowing them to remain active in their families and communities. By strengthening diabetes care in underserved areas, the project will encourage more patients to seek regular treatment. In the long term, this will improve survival rates and reduce the burden of advanced diabetes on hospitals.
