Progress Report on LIfe-Saving Medical Care in Myanmar (August to September 2024)

August 2024

In August, the medical support team performed a total of 61 surgeries, including 23 cleft lip and palate surgeries, conducted by local Myanmar medical staff trained by Japan Heart. In September, a specialized medical team from Japan will arrive to further train local staff in cleft lip and palate procedures and pediatric surgery. These ongoing medical missions aim to address the significant medical needs of patients amid Myanmar’s current challenging environment.

Japan Heart remains committed to providing continuous healthcare support and strengthening local medical capabilities.

September 2024

In September, Japan Heart’s medical team conducted 62 surgeries in Myanmar, despite the ongoing instability. Efforts remain focused on providing essential medical support where possible.

Key progress was made in the comprehensive treatment project for cleft lip and palate, initiated in 2019. Japanese specialists, Dr. M (Principal of Naniwa Dental Hygiene School) and Dr. K (Japan Heart-certified physician), conducted an intensive three-day training. This included lectures and practical sessions for 30 Myanmar-based dentists from various regions. The training was well-received, significantly enhancing local expertise in specialized cleft treatment.

Japan Heart continues to prioritize capacity-building in cleft lip and palate care by inviting experts to advance local skills and establish a sustainable treatment framework for patients in Myanmar.
