Dear Donors
Karitas Relief Mission continues its efforts to support vulnerable individuals who require specialized medical treatment but cannot afford the associated costs. Through the Life-Saving Spinal Cord Surgery project, the organization seeks to assist a patient living with severe spinal injuries following a tragic accident.
The patient sustained a serious back injury when a stone fell on him while he was working in a quarry. The injury damaged his spinal cord, leaving him with paralysis of the legs and requiring specialized medical attention. He previously underwent surgery at Mulago National Referral Hospital, where metal implants were inserted to support his spine.
Despite the earlier medical intervention, his condition remains a serious concern, and further specialized treatment is needed. The financial burden has made it difficult for him to access the medical care required to improve his condition and quality of life.
2. Current Situation and Project Progress
During this reporting period, Karitas Relief Mission continued to highlight the patient's medical needs and the urgency of securing financial assistance for further treatment.
The patient's condition has been particularly distressing because he continues to experience paralysis of the legs. There have also been serious concerns about deterioration of the affected back area, which has increased his fear and uncertainty about his future.
The project remains focused on mobilizing the resources necessary to facilitate the recommended medical intervention. The required treatment is important not only for addressing the underlying spinal problem but also for enabling medical professionals to assess the patient's condition and determine the most appropriate course of care.
The surgery has not yet been completed. The project therefore remains in need of financial support to help the patient access the necessary specialized treatment.
3. Fundraising and Resource Mobilization
The estimated funding requirement for the project is US$19,650. This amount is intended to support the medical intervention and associated expenses included in the project budget.
Karitas Relief Mission continues to seek assistance from compassionate individuals, charitable organizations, medical supporters, and international partners.
Although fundraising efforts have brought encouragement, the available resources have not yet been sufficient to complete the planned intervention. Continued contributions are essential to help bridge the funding gap and move the project toward its intended goal.
4. Challenges Encountered
The project continues to face several significant challenges:
- Insufficient funding: The cost of specialized spinal treatment remains beyond the patient's financial capacity.
- Medical urgency: The patient's continuing paralysis and reported deterioration of the affected back area make timely medical assessment especially important.
- Emotional distress: The uncertainty surrounding his condition has caused considerable fear and worry about his future.
- Limited access to specialized care: Further treatment depends on securing adequate financial resources and coordinating the necessary medical services.
These challenges demonstrate the need for a coordinated response involving donors, healthcare professionals, and humanitarian organizations.
5. Importance of the Intervention
The primary objective of this project is to help the patient access the specialized treatment recommended by his medical team.
The anticipated benefits include:
1. Enabling access to further medical assessment and appropriate spinal treatment.
2. Addressing the complications associated with his spinal injury.
3. Supporting efforts to improve his comfort, dignity, and quality of life.
4. Giving the patient and his family renewed hope during this difficult period.
5. Reducing the financial burden associated with seeking specialized medical care.
The medical outcome cannot be guaranteed, particularly given the severity of the spinal injury and the continuing paralysis. Nevertheless, access to appropriate treatment and professional medical care remains essential.
6. Next Steps
Karitas Relief Mission intends to continue mobilizing funds and engaging potential donors to support the patient's medical needs.
The next steps include:
- Securing additional financial contributions toward the estimated project budget.
- Coordinating with the treating medical team to establish the appropriate treatment plan and associated costs.
- Supporting the patient in accessing timely medical assessment, especially concerning the reported deterioration of the affected back area.
- Providing donors with updates on fundraising progress and verified medical developments.
- Exploring additional partnerships that could help reduce the financial burden and facilitate access to specialized care.
Given the reported deterioration of the back area, prompt medical evaluation is particularly important rather than waiting for the full fundraising target to be reached.
7. Conclusion and Appeal for Support
The Life-Saving Spinal Cord Surgery project reflects Karitas Relief Mission's commitment to standing with vulnerable people facing serious medical challenges. The patient's journey has been marked by physical suffering, financial hardship, and uncertainty about the future.
Although the planned surgery has not yet taken place, the organization remains committed to mobilizing the support needed to help him access appropriate medical care.
We sincerely appeal to donors, charitable organizations, medical institutions, and compassionate individuals to join us in this effort. Every contribution brings us closer to securing the treatment and support this patient urgently needs.
Together, we can help restore hope, uphold human dignity, and give a vulnerable patient an opportunity to receive the specialized care he deserves.
