Strength and Resilience of Ukrainian Mothers

Dear friends,

Thank you for being there for Ukrainian children who need treatment for serious diseases. Your generosity has brought hope to families like Yulia’s, who have faced unimaginable challenges.

Yulia and her family once lived in a serene house in the village on the bank of the Dnipro River in Kherson Oblast. Their days were filled with the simple joys of living amidst nature, surrounded by familiar paths through the nearby forest. Little did they know that one day, this tranquility would be shattered by the horrors of Russian occupation.

Amid this nightmare, Yulia faced an even more terrible situation – her youngest son, Danya, was diagnosed with leukemia. Under the occupation, obtaining quality treatment for a child with cancer was impossible. The only hope was to transport Danya to the government-controlled territory of Ukraine, even though it meant risking their lives.

"We knew it could be a one-way trip," Yulia recounts. "We got into the car, with my dad at the wheel. Danya was placed between my husband and me in the back seat, shielded in case of shelling. In my son’s jacket pocket, I hid a letter, begging to save him if we didn’t make it. I wrote about Danya’s diagnosis and his need for regular blood transfusions."

Their convoy moved swiftly, passing through Mykolaiv, then Lviv, Rzeszow, and finally reaching Rome, where Danya received the life-saving treatment he so desperately needed. They lived in the Peter Pan House there – the same facility that inspired us to establish our recently inaugurated Dacha Family House in Ukraine, a place where families with children on cancer treatment can live free of charge.

Today, Danya is in remission, and his older sister, Amina, is by his side. Yulia’s journey is a testament to the strength and resilience of Ukrainian mothers who will do anything to save their children’s lives. Your support is vital in helping mothers like Yulia to save their children.

As we approach GivingTuesday, I would like to ask you to consider donating on November 28. On this day, GlobalGiving will add a bonus to all contributions, amplifying the impact on the lives of Ukrainian children and families. Thank you for your generosity and support!
