Introduction

Elite Star Foundation’s "Life Skills for 7,000 Children in Niger State" program is a transformative initiative designed to address the dual challenges of youth unemployment and food insecurity in Niger State, Nigeria. By equipping young people aged 15-26 with practical, food-related skills, the program aims to empower participants to build sustainable livelihoods, contribute to local food production, and break the cycle of poverty. This report provides an update on the program’s progress, challenges, and next steps.

Program Overview

The program focuses on providing free, comprehensive skills training in food-related fields such as agriculture, food processing, and culinary arts. By targeting 7,000 vulnerable youth, the initiative seeks to:

  1. Reduce youth unemployment by equipping participants with employable skills.
  2. Boost local food production and address food insecurity.
  3. Foster entrepreneurship and economic growth in Niger State.
  4. Create a ripple effect of positive change by empowering youth to become self-reliant and contribute to their communities.

Progress Update

To ensure the program reaches as many children and youth as possible, Elite Star Foundation has adopted a community-based approach, partnering with schools in Niger State. Below is an update on the progress made so far:

1. Partnership with Schools

The foundation has initiated communication with two schools in the community:

  • Applehills Academy
  • Fransh Bomac International Academy

While discussions with these schools are ongoing, the foundation is working to finalize the implementation of the program within their institutions. These partnerships are critical to reaching a significant number of youth and integrating life skills training into the educational framework.

2. Expansion Plans

The foundation has identified two additional schools for potential collaboration:

  • Juneberries School
  • Great Zion International Academy

Currently, these schools are on a mid-term break. As soon as they resume, Elite Star Foundation will establish formal communication to explore partnership opportunities and extend the program’s reach.

3. Community Engagement

In addition to school partnerships, the foundation is actively engaging with community leaders and stakeholders to raise awareness about the program and ensure widespread participation. This approach ensures that the program is inclusive and accessible to all eligible youth, including those who may not be enrolled in formal education.

Challenges

While significant progress has been made, the program has encountered some challenges:

  1. Delays in Finalizing Partnerships: Discussions with schools are still in the preliminary stages, and the process of formalizing partnerships has taken longer than anticipated.
  2. School Breaks: The mid-term break at some schools has temporarily halted communication and implementation efforts.
  3. Resource Constraints: Ensuring the availability of training materials, facilitators, and infrastructure for 7,000 participants requires substantial resources, which the foundation is actively working to secure.

Next Steps

To ensure the successful implementation of the program, Elite Star Foundation will focus on the following actions:

  1. Finalize School Partnerships: Accelerate discussions with Applehills Academy and Fransh Bomac International Academy to formalize agreements and begin training sessions.
  2. Engage Additional Schools: Establish communication with Juneberries School and Great Zion International Academy as soon as they resume from their mid-term break.
  3. Mobilize Resources: Secure funding, training materials, and qualified facilitators to ensure the program’s sustainability and scalability.
  4. Community Outreach: Intensify efforts to engage community leaders and stakeholders to promote the program and encourage participation.
  5. Monitoring and Evaluation: Develop a robust framework to track the program’s impact, measure outcomes, and make data-driven improvements.

Conclusion

Elite Star Foundation remains committed to its mission of empowering vulnerable children and youth in Nigeria. The "Life Skills for 7,000 Children in Niger State" program is a testament to this commitment, offering a pathway to a brighter future for thousands of young people. While challenges remain, the foundation is confident that with continued support from partners, stakeholders, and the community, the program will achieve its objectives and create a ripple effect of positive change in Niger State.
