Many Nigerians returning from Libya, UAE, Italy, or perilous journeys through Sahara and Mediterranean have endured traumatic experiences, including trafficking and exploitation. Upon their return, they often face stigma, lack of support, and limited opportunities, making reintegration into society challenging. This project will provide life skills training to 100 Nigerian returnees and trafficking survivors in Edo State, focusing on tailoring, soap and hygiene products reusable sanitary pads.
Many Nigerians returning from Libya, the UAE, and Italy have endured traumatic experiences, including trafficking and exploitation. According to the IOM, a substantial number of Nigerian trafficking victims in Europe originate from Edo State, often transiting through Libya. From 2017 to 2021, the Edo State Government reported receiving over 5,000 returnees from Libya. The lack of practical skills and economic opportunities increases their vulnerability to re-trafficking and continued hardship.
This project aims to equip 100 Nigerian returnees and trafficking survivors in Edo State with practical skills in tailoring, soap and hygiene product making, and the production of reusable sanitary pads. By providing hands-on training and starter kits, participants can establish small businesses and reducing the risk of re-trafficking. Community-based reintegration projects have demonstrated that skill acquisition and economic empowerment are effective strategies for sustainable reintegration.
By providing 100 Nigerian returnees and trafficking survivors in Edo State with sustainable livelihoods, this project promotes economic independence and social reintegration. Building on successful models like the IOM's community-based reintegration projects in Nigeria, over the next two years, we aim to: reduce re-trafficking rates by 40% in target communities, create over 80 viable small businesses, and train 30 graduates as peer mentors to support ongoing reintegration efforts.
