Blue Cross Chad is focusing on young men and women from the city of N'Djamena as participants in the comprehensive prevention project, in particular pupils from partner secondary schools in the city of N'Djamena and motorbike taxi drivers. Since Blue Cross Chad was founded, they have gained extensive experience in supporting children, adolescents, and young people facing disadvantaged situations. By utilizing a life skills approach, they work to prevent addiction and violence among teenagers while promoting the adoption of healthy behaviors. Over the years, the Blue Cross Chad has significantly evolved its approach to tackling addiction by professionalising its services as a recent external evaluation illustrates.
For several years, the project has focused on developing life skills among its target group of young people aged 15 and older. Additionally, the project has tailored specific activities to adress the needs of various profiles of young people, including youth without stable employment, victims of violence, and those struggeling with substance abuse. In Chad, alcohol-related issues are widespread, also among young people and even children:
"Alcohol is a danger to society and a serious threat to young people. It's even present in schools!" (Parent of a young person)
In addition to young people, another key target group are out-of-school motorbike taxi drivers. These young individuals are involved in risky activities and operate in street environments where a culture of violence and alcohol and other drugs are prevalent. Often taking up this work as a means of survival due to unemployment, they are marginalized and require targeted interventions to help them overcome these challenges. Their income is frequently misused on alcohol and other substances, making them an important focus of the prevention program in Chad.
One motorcycle taxi driver shares his story: "Blue Cross has been a huge help to me. My way of communicating has improved, and before spending money, I now prioritize saving. The Blue Cross Chad team was able to save me because I used to drink excessively. Thanks to their support, I’ve changes my way of drinking. I am truly grateful!”
Thank you so much for your generous donations to this valuable project in Chad, which is making a lasting impact on the lives of young people. Every dollar counts and truly makes a difference in the local community. A thousand thanks!
