Organized by Rural Health Mission Nigeria, this project will procure and distribute 10000 lifesaving Clean Birth Kits to 50 rural communities in northeastern Nigeria. The project also will train 2000 birth attendants on lifesaving skills. Rural Health Mission Nigeria has established relationships with these communities. It has been supplying essential medicines for pregnant women and has deployed volunteers to render direct service and to train health workers on basic lifesaving skill.
In Nigeria, a woman's chance of dying from pregnancy and childbirth is 1 in 13. Many of these deaths are preventable, but the availability and quality of health care services continue to fail women and children. Presently, less than 20% of health facilities offer emergency obstetric care and only 35% are staffed by skilled attendants.
By providing under-resourced facilities in rural communities with Clean Birth Kits, prenatal education, and staff training we can save lives. The Clean Birth Kit is a complete delivery pack to provide a clean birthing environment for safe and healthy delivery of the mother and her baby. The Kits ensure the World Health Organization's "6 Cleans:" clean hands, clean perineum, clean delivery surface, clean cord cutting implement, clean cord tying, and clean cord care.
The WHO and United Nations have recommended Clean Birth Kits for decades.According to Blencowe et al (BMC Public Health, 2011), "systematic review identified 30 studies showing that clean birth practices can substantially reduce neonatal mortality and morbidity from infection-related causes, including tetanus." This project will reach 10000 women in 50 remote villages which will significantly reduce maternal mortality in this community. A plan to reach more communities is in place.
