Villages: La Higuera, El Pino, & Jesús María

Batopilas, Chihuahua, Mexico.

The CAPTAR A.C. team received a request for rainwater harvest systems from the indigenous Tribal Chief José del Carmen Lugo Armendariz of the villages of La Higuera, El Pino and Jesús María, in the municipality in Batopilas Chihuahua, Mexico.

The community of Jesús María is located at a driving distance of 3 hours in a 4x4 pickup truck from the municipal capital of Batopilas, also named Batopilas.

La Higuera and El Pino are located at distances of a 4 hour walk from the village of Jesus Maria because they do not have roads where a vehicle can travel.

The first meeting with the tribal chief was held in the village of Jesus Maria.

He explained the conditions of the villages of La Higuera, El Pino and Jesus Maria.

He shared with us a list of families in these tree villages that need of support, mainly food, water, and housing.

There are approximately 130 families. They do not have birth certificates; they are in total abandonment. There are no schools in La Higuera and El Pino, there are no rural clinics. They are malnutrition. There is no employment of any kind, and they live in extreme poverty. Because they do not have official identification, they are not eligible for any kind of government support.

The closest school to La Higuera and El Pino is in Jesús María, that means a 4-hour walk twice a day for children. They do not attend school for this reason.

In Jesús María there is a kindergarten, an elementary school, and a high school.

The natives of these villages receive medical check-ups when the health brigades visit them. They have not received any medical visits nor health attention for over a year.

The natives dedicated their time to the care of their goats, which are for their own consumption. This year they did not have a harvest of beans nor corn for food subsistence.

They do not have any economic income.

A second assessment is scheduled for February 2024, which will include all three villages.
