Summary

We have been working to improve the lives of orphaned, abandoned and underserved children in Afghanistan since 2010. We started with a locally managed food security program (greenhouse and chicken farm) that helped hundreds of orphaned children find loving foster homes simply because they came with food. In 2020, we launched a home-based poultry program for war widows and we opened a vocational school for orphaned girls. Despite great challenges, all programs are active today!

Challenge

For more than 40 years Afghanistan has been embroiled in one war after another. This has left the country's infrastructure, economy, and population crippled, leaving a prolific number of war widows and orphaned children without a support system. Our efforts focus on providing basic care and job opportunities to orphaned children and widows in the northeastern Afghan providence of Badakhshan. The Taliban now control this region but they have given us provisional authority to continue our work.

Solution

Global Roots is providing a nurturing environment for otherwise destitute children as well as job opportunities for the local women who have few options to provide for themselves and their families.

Long-Term Impact

We met our original mission goal to take care of the basic needs of 20 orphaned children and 30 other extremely poor children in Baharak back in 2012. The number of children in our program swelled to nearly 400 in 2015. Our success in providing support to orphaned children prompted a Northern Taliban commander to grant us the authority we needed in late 2021 to continue our work. Today we operate two vocational schools for orphaned girls and a massive food security project.
