Freezing conditions bring safety to our children

By Richard Montgomery | Executive Director

preparing for spring

It’s the heart of the winter in Afghanistan. The 290 children we support are all healthy and well taken care of. Fifty of the most recent arrivals have been fostered by loving but poor families in three different villages.

Our children were taken in because families from neighboring communities know that each child comes from the Baharak Children’s Garden (BCG) and that their sponsored child can return for more food and supplies when the snows melt. Our hardworking local administrators carefully track the wellbeing of each fostered child.

198 of the children we support live at an orphanage in Faizabad and each one knows (either consciously or subconsciously depending on the age) that the heavy snows and freezing conditions keep the Taliban and any other force who might want to take them away from safety and school, at bay.

Foreign mercenaries have temporarily left Afghanistan and local fighters have returned to their villages but most will return in the spring as it looks like foreign powers will continue to fund this horrid war in Afghanistan for years to come.

We must keep an eye on the war because, wherever it moves, children will be abducted in its wake.

With support from GlobalGiving donors and an east coast family foundation in the USA, we are able to keep nearly 290 children alive and safe from street abduction and the horrors of war.

Please see the attached photos that depict the hard work of our winter-time gardeners and a few shots of our last harvest.

It’s crazy to think that the safest time of year for our children comes when the temperatures drop below minus 20 and it’s too cold for men to continue their pathetic turf and mind war in Afghanistan.

Stary tuned for spring shots of our food security program and the vibrant community it empowers! Only by building local community can the war in Afghanistan end.

One of the young orphaned girls we support (who we will call Sama) told her caregiver that she is looking forward to planting cucumbers in our garden this spring because she likes pickles and she knows that cucumbers can become pickles "with love and care".

We at Global Roots know that each of the young children we support can become whateer they want to be with love and care.

Thank you for your support!
